In one of the previous post we learned what is distributed switch and how to create one.
In this post, we’ll discuss how to add ESXi hosts in vSphere Distributed Switch. Once the distributed switch is created, the next step is add ESXi hosts to the distributed switch.
Before we proceed further we need to ensure that the following prerequisites are met -
- Verify that there are enough uplinks available on the distributed switch to assign to the physical NICs that you want to connect to the switch.
- Verify that there is at least one distributed port group created on the distributed switch.
- Verify that the distributed port group have active uplinks configured in its teaming and failover policy.
Once you ensure that, follow below steps -
Login to vCenter Server from HTML5 Client. Navigate to Networking Tab. Right Click on the Distributed Switch and click on Add and Manage Hosts.
2. On the Select task page, select Add hosts, and click NEXT
3. Click on + New hosts, select the host(s) which you would like to add to vDS and click NEXT
4. On the Manage physical adapters page, you can select the necessary physical network adapters (network interface controllers – NICs) and assign uplinks to them.
5. Next you can assign VMkernel adapters to the distributed switch.
6. Next, if you need to migrate virtual machines to the distributed virtual switch, you can do it at this step. In the current example, since there are no VM's running on the host no network adapters are migrated to the VDS.
7. Review the settings and click on FINISH if there is nothing to change.
Once the task is completed successfully, you will be able to see the host(s) associated with your vDS.
With this I'll wrap up this post here.
I hope you have enjoyed reading this post.
