We have already discussed What is Distributed Switch.
One of the parts of the vSphere upgrade process after performing a major upgrade is to upgrade vSphere Distributed Switch. In this post I'll be upgrading a vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS) from version 6.0 to 6.5.
1. First and most important prerequisites is to perform a backup of vSphere Distributed Switch.
2. Then we will review the current vDS settings by viewing the Summary Tab on the Networking Screen. As you can see here we have upgrade available for this Distributed Switch.
3. Click on the Actions menu then browse to Upgrade, and choose Upgrade Distributed Switch.
4. On the upgrade wizard, click Next to confirm the upgrade.
5. In the next stage vCenter performs compatibility check to see if connected hosts are compatible. Click Next to continue.
6. On the last screen, review the summary and click Finish.
7. Once the switch upgrade completes, you can see the new version shown on the Summary tab of the Networking screen.
This concludes the process of upgrading VMware Distributed Switch from version 6.0 to version 6.5.
